As a singer for almost 15 years, I have many experiences in the singing industry. Everyone could be a singer, but not everyone knows how to sing. To sing, according to Koopman, a former reporter, and journalist, is when one produces the musical sound with voices while sustaining the accurate tone, rhythm, and other skills that are required to form a melody. It is vital for you to be in good condition before you could sing well to the audience. Hence, there are several tips that I will be sharing today to assist you in preparing yourself before singing.
(i) Drink More Water
The number one tip, or also known as the most important step that you should take is to drink more water. It sounds ridiculous when people keep using this tip as a solution for all body related issues, such as sicknesses, but water is indeed the only access in hydrating every part of your body. By drinking a lot of water, your vocal cord will be smooth and that helps your voice to flow swimmingly. Vocal cord plays the most important role in singing. Drench your thirst is the only way to preserve your vocal cord in the good condition.
(ii) Avoid Over Practicing
Other than drinking water, restrict yourself from over practicing is another effective way to preserve your voice too. Based on my experience, I usually sing once or twice before the show just for the sake of vocal warm-up. I have a singing colleague who sings very well. She joined a singing competition back in a few years ago. Before her performance, she practiced too much as she wanted herself to be perfect, but ended up losing her voice when she was actually on the stage to sing towards the judges. That caused her to claim as the last place in that competition. From her scenario, it is obvious that practicing too much will cause a retroaction which makes you lose your voice.
(iii) No Sugary Food Before Singing
Apart from that, avoid yourself from eating sugary food is the smartest way to prevent your throat from getting messed up by the phlegm. The sugary food contains the sweet elements that would dry up your throat. In my experience, it is common for singers to consume honey before they sing. I personally disagree with such approach as honey is a sugary substance that will affect our voice when we overeat them. It does somehow good in making our voice smoother, but I would recommend you to take just a teaspoon or drink it along with warm water a few hours before singing.
In a nutshell, it is not difficult to sing if you know how to prepare yourself dexterously. We only have one voice for a lifetime, thus taking care of your throat is important to keep yourself singing until your old age.
